OTTAWA – National Volunteer Week 2013 marks the tenth consecutive year Investors Group has supported the campaign. In celebration of this remarkable commitment to community from Canada’s leading corporate supporter of volunteer recognition, Volunteer Canada is collaborating with volunteer centres in communities from coast to coast to roll out Canada’s first comprehensive, national volunteer recognition program.
“National Volunteer Week is all about saying thank you to Canada's 13.3 million volunteers,” said Paula Speevak Sladowski, Interim President and COO of Volunteer Canada. “Organizations around the country are finding new and creative ways to show their appreciation in ways that are meaningful to their volunteers. For those looking to volunteering for career development, formally recognizing a volunteer’s skills and experiences can really boost their confidence and chances when pursuing future opportunities."
Created by the Centre d’action bénévole de Québec, PREB: Building Canadian Communities through Volunteer Recognition was adapted to English in 2012; is being pilot tested in communities across Canada in lead-up to National Volunteer Week 2013; and will officially be rolled out nationally beginning this summer.
“For Investors Group, being Canada’s corporate leader in volunteer recognition has been a very important priority for us for many years as demonstrated by our partnership with Volunteer Canada for the past decade,” said Murray Taylor, Investors Group President and Chief Executive Officer. “Volunteers support us in all that we do. They coach, teach, mentor, nourish, campaign, build and listen to keep Canadian communities everywhere healthy and safe. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Volunteer Canada and spreading the word about National Volunteer Week and volunteerism.”
The national dissemination of PREB will be announced on Tuesday, April 23 at 1:00 p.m. EST, through a “Virtual Ribbon Cutting” on the Volunteer Canada Facebook page. Canadians everywhere are encouraged to visit the page at that time and participate.
“Hanging out” with the Governor General
To further kick-off National Volunteer Week 2013, Volunteer Canada will participate in a “Google Hangout” with the Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable David Johnston, on Monday, April 22 at 1:30 p.m. EST. Other participants include Community Foundations of Canada and United Way Toronto. The conversation will focus on current trends and innovations in youth volunteer engagement, as well as the importance of volunteer recognition, particularly while engaging and retaining youth volunteers.

Saying thanks from Parliament Hill
On Tuesday, April 23, Volunteer Canada will co-host a National Volunteer Week reception on Parliament Hill with Senator Terry Mercer, CFRE. The event will bring together up to 100 non-profit, corporate and government leaders from across the National Capital Region to join in the celebration of the contributions of Canada’s 13.3 million volunteers to Canadian communities everywhere.
“It is not a stretch to say that every Canadian has been touched by the work of our voluntary sector in some way,” Senator Mercer said. “Honouring local donors, volunteers, foundations, businesses and others involved in philanthropy is important because these people and organizations serve as role models and shining examples for others in their communities.”
Volunteer recognition – anytime, from anywhere
Earlier this month, in lead-up to National Volunteer Week 2013, Volunteer Canada launched its first-ever online “Thank You Wall,” designed to provide Canadians with a platform through which to say “thank you” to any or all of Canada’s volunteers anytime, from anywhere. The “Thank You Wall” lives within Volunteer Canada’s new website – www.volunteer.ca – which was rebuilt, and launched in December, 2012, thanks to the support of the Government of Canada.
”During National Volunteer week our government would like to recognize and thank all those Canadians whose volunteer work enriches our communities,” said the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. “It is their tireless commitment and dedication to others that makes our country such a great place in which to live.”
