Canada is losing volunteers, and communities are feeling it. Between 2018 and 2023, Canada lost approximately 900 million hours of formal and informal volunteering. The formal volunteer rate fell from 41% to 32%. More than 3,500 of the community organizations that anchor volunteering closed between 2020 and 2025. Every one of those lost hours was help a person was counting on. That work now lands on paid staff who are already stretched, costs more to deliver, or does not get done at all.

We have asked the federal government to act on this in Budget 2026.
